Getting Started
Introduction

memi is your personal finance management package designed to give you all the tools you need to build your personal profile and get back in control of your finances and your life.
It is easy to learn and use and will enable you to understand where the money goes and how you can control your financial future. By following this 4 week plan, you will be ready to enter your data and already be in the habit of thinking about and controlling your finances.
Remember!
To properly budget and plan your finances; you must get into the habit of recording everything.
Week 1

- Buy a small book for recording everything that you spend. A 7 day diary is best because you can see the whole week at a glance.
- Get into the habit of carrying it with you and record your purchases every day eg Tuesday Lunch $16.00. It is easy to forget that $5 that you spent 2 days ago.
- At the end of the week, calculate the total for that week. Write it on the last day (usually Sunday) in a prominent way.
- If you buy something using a credit card, record that in brackets. The memi system will sort that for you.
- Start your plan - why do you want control of your finances? What are you saving up for? (a reward at the end always helps to motivate)
Week 2

- Continue with your record keeping.
- Have you written everything?
- Have you noticed that you are starting to become aware of what you spend because you know you are going to write it in your book?
- Total your expenditure for this week and compare it to last week. When you eventually use the memi system - it will do all the totals for you. This exercise is just to get into the habit of seeing how much you are actually spending.
Week 3

- Continue with your record keeping.
- It is said that to create a habit, you need to repeat it 150 times or more for a month. Your record needs to become a habit. Think of it as a permanent diet that will set you free.
- Total your expenditure and compare it to last week.
- Review your plan - have you set spending limits? Are you more aware of where money is being wasted? Perhaps you can already see where you can cut back on some spending.
Week 4

- Continue with your record keeping.
- Total your expenditure and compare it to last week.
- You are now ready and have enough data to begin to enter it into memi to create your personal profiles and graphs.
- Log on to memi, follow the prompts and you are on your way. With the last four weeks of data, you will instantly see the benefits of record keeping.
- Set your goals - dream your dream. If you see it happen, you are on the way to success.
